October 2021 Director’s Newsletter

September 24, 2021

I am writing this newsletter a week early as I will be knee deep in my oldest daughter’s wedding next week! I will surely miss seeing your darling children and their joy at being with their friends at school.

Here are a few upcoming/ongoing events for you to know about:

Curriculum Night
As the school year gets underway and we approach Parent-Teacher conferences we want to take some time to share with you the magic and intentionality of our Berry Patch Curriculum. I will host a webinar on Zoom on Tuesday, November 16 at 7:30 pm. You will receive more information on what I will be sharing at the beginning of November, but wanted you to SAVE THE DATE now!

Library Time at The Patch
Our schools are blessed with a full library of books that began with an original donation from a Berry Patch family nearly two decades ago and has expanded with current family birthday book donations over the years since then. Beginning in October your children will get to experience ‘visiting’ the library area, having a special story time, and checking out (and returning!) their own book EVERY WEEK. Your child’s teacher will provide details on which day this will be for your child’s class.  This resource is a foundational part of our emphasis on important early literacy skills and foster a deep love of books and reading!

Early Childhood Screening
Our partnership with area school districts is a key community connection for our preschool. Early Childhood Screening is required for all MN students entering Kindergarten. We highly recommend that all Berry Patch families schedule their child’s screening to occur as soon as their child turns three (calling your school district before your child’s 3rd birthday.) This resource for all Minnesotans is part of our fantastic educational system and the earlier your child receives their screening the better! The following announcement from Edina Schools is the same message that all school districts desire for their community members to hear:
Screen your child at age 3 at the Edina Early Learning Center! Early Childhood Screening is a quick and easy way to check in on your child’s health and development before they begin kindergarten. The state of Minnesota requires all children be screened and recommends screening at age 3 to provide ample time to provide support if needed. Please email us at to schedule your free early childhood screening! Early childhood developmental screening helps school districts identify children who may benefit from district and community resources available to help in their development. Early childhood developmental screening includes a look at gross motor, speech, social emotional, and other areas of development. At the conclusion of the screening, the parent/legal guardian will be given a summary of the screening results and can discuss concerns they may have about their child’s development or circumstances that could affect their child’s learning. The screening summary will become a part of the child’s school record and is required to enroll in a public school district. We are scheduling screenings now and are here to answer any questions you may have about the process. Please reach out to Tabitha Denison, Early Outreach Manager, at the Edina Early Learning Center to book your screening appointment. You can reach us at or by phone at 952-848-3985.

Our partnerships with you as parents of our berries and with our community schools are part of what makes our school such a special place. THANK YOU for being a key to making The Berry Patch a gift to us all. I’ll see you in October!

With Gratitude,
Molly Lounsberry Dykstra
